A pick-up game of football in an alley off Elm and Cherry Streets turned into an impromptu lesson on fire safety as the kids in the neighborhood begged to see the fire truck; while the firefighters were on a detail installing smoke detectors in a nearby residence.

Norristown served as a backdrop for an unusual sight Sunday, as firefighters from Philadelphia to Stowe to Lower Merion trained in a mass decontamination drill. Although the Norristown Fire Department was not directly involved, department officers oversaw many aspects of the overall drill. The large scale drill was sponsored by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional Taskforce.

Norristown Firefighters headed to Nesquehoning, Monroe County, to the Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. (KME) to inspect their new engine. This engine will replace the 1989 Hahn that is housed in the Montgomery Station. Good progress is being made on the engine and is expected to arrive in Norristown by the middle of this summer.

Norristown Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in a dwelling in the zero hundred block of East Basin Street this afternoon. The fire appeared to have started on the back stairs and extended into the kitchen. Fire also extended into an attached property. No one was home at the time of the fire, however, firefighters were able to safely remove a pet cat from the home.

Norristown Firefighters responded to a vehicle accident in front of the Plymouth Community Ambulance Building at Main and Green Sts this morning. Two people became trapped after their vehicle flipped on its side. Crews stabilized the vehicle then removed the roof providing extrication of the victims. No serious injuries were reported

Norristown Firefighters, along with King of Prussia and Penn Wynne Firefighters, spent the day training in trench rescue. Training took place in the Elmwood Park Area. The training involved shoring up the sides of a trench, then digging out the victim of a collapsed ditch. It is considered one of the most dangerous rescue operations to complete. These three departments make up the Montgomery County Southeastern Technical Rescue Taskforce, which continually train and respond to technical rescues in the area.

The Spitko Family is good example of a number of families in the Norristown Fire Department which continues to carry on the great traditions of the fire department.

Norristown Firefighters extinguished a fire in a basement on the zero hundred block of East Elm Street this afternoon. Crews from East Norriton, Center Square, Plymouth and Barren Hill assisted to bring the fire under control.
