Norristown Fire Department's Capt. Robert Spitko was recognized by Gov. Tom Corbett at the annual budget speech to the Pennsylvania General Assembly on Tuesday, February 7th. Capt. Spitko, along with Rick Russo, of Neshannock Fire Department, were honored for their efforts in saving the life of a homeless woman, Shirley Pearson, who clung to a tree in the Stony Creek during the flooding rains of Hurricane Irene.
Capt. Spitko and FF Russo inched their way in complete darkness through the swift, flooded, woods edge of the Stony Creek, following the screams of Ms. Pearson for 10 to 15 minutes, until reaching her and bringing her to safety.
Along with Gov. Corbett we extend our congratulations to Capt. Spitko and FF Russo.
