MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES
Date: 5/28/07 Members of the Norristown Fire Department participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the grave of General John Hartranft, during Memorial Day observances at Montgomery Cemertary. John Hartranft was a decorated general during the Civil War and contributed greatly to the successful outcome of the war. He was also Governor of the State of Pennsylvania. Members of the Montgomery Hose Fire Company were especially proud since Hartranft was the President of their company. Wreaths were also layed on the tomb of General John Hancock; for which the Hancock Fire Company of Norristown was named.
VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH CAR FIRE
Date: 5/19/07 A firefighter, Jimmy Lentz, was at Main and Ford Sts when a vehicle crashed into the side of the laundromat, in a strip mall, at that intersection. The victim's car struck the power and gas lines igniting a fire. Firefighter Lentz then assisted in getting the victim out of the vehicle before it became fully involved in fire. The victim was flown to a Philadelphia Hospital. Because the fire could not be extinguished until PECO arrived on location, to secure the power and gas, fire extended into the laundromat. Norristown Firefighters, with the help of Plymouth, Bridgeport, Lower Providence and West Norriton Firefighters, were able to save the laundromat and strip mall from major damage.
VEHICLE RESCUE
Date: 5/12/07 The Norristown Fire Department responded to 3 Dekalb St. for a vehicle rescue. When firefighters arrived, one female was still in the vehicle as it see-sawed over the edge of a 15ft wall. Firefighters and Police used their physical strengths to stabilize the vehicle while the victim was removed.
CAR FIRE
Date: 5/11/07 The Norristown Fire Department was dispatched to standby at an accident scene in the 1000 Blk of Sandy St. Enroute, dispatch notified units that the electrical pole was on fire. Once on location, all firefighters could do was to watch the pole, car and major phone and electrical wires burn due to live wires being down. PECO eventually arrived on the scene and secured the power. Firefighters were then able to extinguish the flames.
NEW ASSISTANT CHIEFS APPOINTED
Date: 5/1/07 The Norristown Fire Department promoted three new Assistant Chiefs. David Keeley will represent the Fairmount Engine Company No. 2. David has served the department for 15 years. Prior to his appointment, he served the Fairmount as a Lieutenant. Brian VanBuskirk will represent the Montgomery Hose Fire Company. Brian has served the department for 10 years. Prior to his appointment, he was the Captain of the Montgomery. Harry Reese will represent the Hancock Fire Company. Harry has also served the department for 10 years. During his tenure, he served as a Lieutenant at the Hancock. All three men are nationally certified firefighters and fire officers.
